My art and worldview are influenced by the immensity of space in my homeland of New Mexico. In my art, I am expressing layers of stories about relationships with space, with nature and with each other. Seen from a distance, the pieces interact with the space around them and as one draws nearer, details of the space expand.

When creating the art dolls, old clothing patterns are layered, creating a map on the body. Growing up, my mom made everything by hand including our clothing. The clothing patterns, fabrics, and hand stitching that I incorporate all speak of an origin language taught by my mother of a life made by hand. Maps are an integral part of how I express space and position in space. In Paris for an art residency, I created birds-eye view maps of walks I took as I discovered the city as a foreigner. Looking for the familiar in an unfamiliar space, these map drawings transformed into totemic sky beings and tell the story of movement in space and how we bring our stories wherever we are.

I often portray birds in my work because they are the go-betweens between sky and earth. Arctic terns appear as metaphor for movement through space because they have the longest migration. I incorporate birds, maps, cartography symbols, typography, and pathways as a way to relate the layers of stories that exist in time and space. They can be stories of the past or of imagined futures. My work is often textile and sculptural, incorporating hand stitching, drawing, paint, collage and found objects.

There is special alchemical moment in the creation of the sculptural art dolls, where the dynamic shifts from me making decisions to being led. The personality and story arrives quietly and guides me on.

Giving voice to nature’s silent narratives, artist Annie Lindberg explores visual storytelling as an imagined nomadic shapeshifter traversing the globe. She records journeys through time and space, portraying intimate histories and possible futures as an arctic tern, a whooping crane, or even a stone. Annie Lindberg is a self-taught visual artist living and working in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Often incorporating textile and sculptural elements, her work emphasizes the beauty of imperfection through hand-stitching, hand-lettering, and the juxtaposition of collage, paint and found objects. Expressing a rhythm between shape, contrast, color and metaphor, she creates a visual language of thresholds in the process of transformation. Annie's work has been included in exhibitions in the United States and internationally including Galerie Deborah Chock (Paris, France), San Francisco International Arts Festival (San Francisco, CA), Ricciardi Gallery (Astoria, OR), Sunwest Gallery (Prescott, AZ), Center for Contemporary Art (Santa Fe, NM), and the Museum of New Mexico Foundation (Santa Fe, NM). Her art is in private collections in the United States and in Europe.
